First Day of (Ski) School

The Ladies Program at Lake Louise Ski Resort finally started! I had my first 2-hour lesson yesterday, with three other ladies and a fantastic aussie instructor: Patty skis since she was a teenager but this was her first formal lesson. She has two kids, 22 and 25. Carrie has three kids and this is her 6th year in the ski program! She told us that her husband gave her the skis, boots and the Ladies Program ‘ticket’ for the first year and she never stopped. Josee has one kid, 11 years-old, and this is her second year on the program. And me.

Ladies Program Day 1

James starting our Ladies Program

We are all at a very similar level (blue/black) and the goal is to start with blues, progressing to blacks as the 6-week program comes to an end. As James said, ‘if you want to ski better, you have to train on blues, not blacks’.  All of us have the same objective: improve our technique. So James, in his 6th year as ski instructor, decided to take a very clever approach. For this first lesson, we learned just ONE thing: to make a turn. A single smooth turn across the slope. But he was brilliant when he showed us the infamous hop/stop. Well, he mentioned it and asked us to go down a slope using it. We did it. And the aha moment came right after that: this is what we SHOULDN’T be doing!

He made us think and understand what we were doing wrong. He made us look at each other and see differences. He made us change places and try, try, try. We didn’t ski much during the two-hour program but it went really fast – I think this is what happen when you are having fun. And we were. So much that we had our lunch break and went back to the slope for an afternoon of fun, skiing the four of us together again. We did different runs and we were always very attentive to our turns – smooth round turns. Patty improved considerably from the morning and I was very excited for her to notice it!

More than learning to ski better, I am doing something for myself. My counsellor mentioned that in two years this was the first time she heard me saying that I was going to do something for myself. I don’t have this feeling but I understand the point. Too many problems and attention to others around me. But not now. The Ladies Program is for myself, is for my personal improvement and delight. And, as my mom said the other day, ‘skiing must be very good as I never heard anyone saying it is not!’
