Parenting and its Perks

We have only this moment...A story that happened recently made me think I am going in the right direction when parenting my son. We don’t get these revelations very often and, being a single mom, I don’t even have my son’s dad to share experiences, questions and doubts. I am alone in this complex and bittersweet job called parenting.

On a weekday, we had to go to our local video store to return some DVDs. We called it ‘popcorn store’ because they have free popcorn for customers and, as my son said, we can’t live without popcorn! My 7-year-old son went alone in the store to return the DVD and I stayed in the car but I mentioned that he could get some popcorn.

I was surprised and an immense amount of happiness inundated my heart when I saw him coming with two popcorn: one for me, one for him! I didn’t ask him to bring me one and I was really not expecting that, but he naturally thought of me and brought some. It was the first time that I had such clear confirmation my son is not a selfish boy and he does think on what other people would want or feel. What a wonderful feeling it was!

To all you parents out there, I don’t have to remind you how hard it is to parent. How many times we repeat the same thing, over and over and over again, just to repeat once again and have that little doubt on the back of our heads if this will just makes us crazy or it will stick to our kids brain and they will, effectively, learn something from us.

But, then, something like the popcorn story happens and, for a second, you think that, YES, you are doing something right! And if I try to find other moments like the popcorn one, I will be surprised that, in fact, I can find a few and I would go back to a year and a half ago, when he had just turned six and we visited the Monterey Aquarium in California.

It was my birthday and we were having a conversation about the aquarium and what we were going to see there a few days prior to our visit. I told my son that sunfish was my favorite but the sunfish was not there this time and we ended up not seeing it. At the end, my son decided to give me a birthday gift and he, very thoughtfully, chose the sunfish stuffy, which I always have in my bed.

Yes, parenting is hard. Yes, single parenting is, maybe, harder. But, not worrying about being cliché, the rewarding is fabulous. And I am happy and proud to be raising such a sweet and thoughtful boy.
