When Life Pauses: Lessons in Resilience from My Dog’s Recovery

You may have noticed a two-week silence here — no posts, no updates. Life had other plans.

Right after returning from an incredible meetup in Marrakech, Morocco, I found myself in full logistical mode: organising my life, my home, and most importantly, my pets, before heading off to spend 12 days in Vancouver. It was a lot. But nothing could have prepared me for what was waiting.

My dog had jumped higher than he should have and given himself a hernia. By the time I was dealing with travel arrangements, he couldn’t walk. Then, as if that weren’t enough, one of the medications the vets prescribed made him seriously ill. For a frightening stretch of time, I genuinely thought I was going to lose him.

He pulled through.

A week after I returned, he started to improve. A month on from the accident, he is still relearning how to walk — but he is getting stronger every single day.

One of the best decisions I made during his recovery was buying a dog stroller. It sounds indulgent, maybe even a little silly. It has been anything but. Instead of me carrying 7 kg on already-tired shoulders (my body thanks me daily), he gets to come along on walks, nose in the breeze, watching the world go by with those bright, curious eyes. He’s lost some weight — actually good news for his spine — and reclaimed his appetite and his signature bark. Loud as ever. I missed it more than I expected.

What strikes me most is his sheer willpower. No self-pity, no giving up — just a quiet, stubborn determination to get better. There is so much we can learn from animals in moments like these. They don’t spiral into worry about what they can’t do yet. They simply keep going.

This experience also taught me something practical: you can support a pet through a serious injury without spending a fortune. In a future post, I’ll share what actually helped, what I’d skip, and how to navigate vet advice when you’re scared and overwhelmed.

For now, he’s in his stroller, the sun is out, and we’re both grateful to be moving forward.

There won’t be a strict order of topics, dates, or categories; instead, expect a spontaneous mix of thoughts and moments.
